IK Concept - 1

A rough concept for a work in progress

This has been a work in progress for a while, and its coming along pretty well. One thing I’m struggling with is deciding what software to use for production. Like most tradigital animators, Flash was my goto for this sort of thing.. But with Adobe steadily abandoning their animators, in favor of web developers, I’ve become more inclined to seek alternatives. I find that I’m often having to trick Flash into doing things I need it to..Consequently, after years of using the software, I’ve developed plenty of shortcuts and workarounds.

Toon Boom, however, has been designed with animators in mind from the start. I’ve recently purchased Animate to Harmony, by Adam Phillips. After a few chapters in, I’ve become painfully aware just how much time I’ve wasted relying on Flash. with an intuitive interface, and a myriad of features, it’s no wonder Toon Boom has risen to be the industry standard in 2D animation. All of this is well and good until you consider the price. Though Toon Boom Harmony has recently adopted a subscription model, it’s still considerably more expensive than all of Adobe’s Creative Suite combined. Not to mention the fact that I have years of bad habits to break learning the software, since using Flash.

Ultimately it comes down to this. Am I willing to put my entire production on hold to learn a new software? I’m not sure, to be honest. I’m about 30 scenes in already, and some of that includes some pretty complex frame-by-frame action. I’d have to start over completely if i switch to now.. But on the bright side, this could be an opportunity to clean up some rough parts. Regardless, I’m hoping to have this production wrapped up by Fall. Stay tuned for more updates!
